o Seminar title: A Novel Security Scheme for the Smart Grid and SCADA Networks

o Abstract: Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) are applications that collect data from a system in order to automate the monitoring and controlling of its activities.
Several industrial fields such as, electric utilities, water supplies and buildings’ facilities have already adopted SCADA systems to increase the efficiency and reduce cost.
However, the IT community is concerned about the level of security that any applied SCADAsystem provides.
This paper concentrates on the major security threats encountered in SCADA systems. In addition, it discusses a new proposed methodology in order to increase the system security with minimal impact on efficiency.
The proposed scheme provides several security services which are mutual authentication, confidentiality, data integrity and accountability.


o Brief Bio:

Dr. Chan Yeob Yeun serves in the position of Assistant Professor at Khalifa University; a position which he has held since September 2008. Assigned to the Computer Engineering Department and Information Security Research Group, Dr. Yeun's primary areas of expertise lie in the area of Information Security, Ubiquitous Network, Cryptography and Convergence Technology such as Cloud Computing Security, Vitalization Security and Security for Internet of Things.

 

Advising closely with postgraduate students including Ph.D., MSc. by Research and MSc. in Information Security, he performs research in an area of Information Security and Cryptography, having written sixty eight publications including Journals and Conferences and two chapters of book compilations as well as ten International Patents. He has been an invited speaker at ITU Telecom World, 3GSM World Congress and various International Conferences and Workshops.

 

He also served as an Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of RFID Security and Cryptography (IJRFIDSC), a Editor of Journal Internet Technology and Secured Transactions (JITST), an Editor of Journal of Convergence (JoC), a Program Chair for International Conference for Internet Technology and Secured Transactions 2011 (ICITST’11) and a Program Chair for International Workshop on RFID/USN Security and Cryptography 2012 (RISC’12) and several Technical Program Committees for International Conferences and Workshops.

 

Gathering a broad expanse of experience and qualifications, Dr. Yeun achieved his MSc. in Information Security, and later obtained his Ph.D. in the same subject from Royal Holloway, University of London, respectively. Actively representing the University, he is a member of several professional organizations, including: SMIEEE, MIMA, CMath and MBCS.

 

Prior to his current position, Dr. Yeun served as the Vice President of LG Electronics, Mobile Communication R&D in Seoul, Korea for developing niche Convergence Technologies that include the World First Mobile TV 3G handsets such as DVB-H, TDMB and MediaFLO with CAS/DRM and also served as a Research Professor at KAIST (formally known as ICU) in Daejeon, Korea and a Visiting Associate Professor at NTUST in Taipei, Taiwan and KAU in Seoul, Korea. He worked as the Wireless Security Team Leader of Toshiba TRL in Bristol, UK for researching and developing 4G and Ubiquitous Security. Letting results speak for his work, he has tackled and withstood some tough challenges along his working career.
