o Abstract:
This talk introduces measurement studies on two well-known networking features: Ethernet jumbo frames and 802.11n frame aggregation. While the two features were proposed to increase throughput (one in Ethernet and the other in wireless network) by allowing transmission of larger packets, both of them exhibit their own advantages and disadvantages depending on applications. To understand the gains and losses, we ask ourselves one question for each of these features: i) Should data center network operators turn on Ethernet jumbo frames? ii) Do available bandwidth estimation (ABE) tools work well with 802.11n frame aggregation enabled?

 

The first part of this talk is focused on advantages (and a small side effect) of enabling Ethernet jumbo frames in modern data center networks. Our study is different from prior work in that we evaluate the performance effects of jumbo frames using modern hardware with canonical data center applications such as MapReduce and tiered Web services. Our results show that data center network operators can safely turn jumbo frames on. In the second part of the talk, we highlight harmful nature of 802.11n frame aggregation feature towards ABE tools. In an indoor testbed, we compare three ABE tools (WBest, Diettop and pathChirp) in various cross-traffic scenarios and find that frame aggregation significantly hurts the accuracy of all tools.

o Bio:
Myungjin Lee is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. He received his Ph.D. from Electrical and Computer Engineering department at Purdue University. His major research interests include scalable measurement architectures and algorithms for data center networks and software-defined networking.
