♣ Title : Traffic Analysis Attacks and Defenses

♣ Abstract
Despite encryption and anonymization, traffic analysis still allows network observers to extract private information about Internet users' online activities. This talk will dive into two well-studied traffic analysis techniques within the Tor anonymous communications network, website fingerprinting and end-to-end correlation, to illustrate how modern traffic analysis attacks work, their practical limitations, and the challenges defenders face. Attendees will gain an overview of the current state of the art in traffic analysis, including technical details of key attacks and defenses, and the risks they pose for everyday Internet users.

♣ Bio
Dr. Marc Juarez is a Lecturer in Cyber Security and Privacy at the University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics. Prior to joining the University of Edinburgh, he was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Southern California. He earned his PhD summa cum laude from KU Leuven's COSIC group, with his dissertation on the evaluation of website fingerprinting techniques recognized as a runner-up for the 2020 ACM SIGSAC Doctoral Dissertation Award. His research focuses on the intersection of machine learning, privacy, and security, particularly developing and evaluating defenses against machine learning-based traffic analysis attacks. Dr. Juarez is a recipient of the 2024 Google Research Scholar Award in Security and has won several best paper awards for his work on traffic analysis, including at PETS 2024 and ESORICS 2016. This work has led to real-world impact in anonymous communication networks like Tor and in implementations of encrypted Internet protocols by Google and Cloudflare.
