Title: Five Years Later: Essential Lessons Learned Transitioning from Network Security Research to Industry

Abstract:

In this talk, I will kick things off by sharing the insights from the last major piece of my PhD thesis, Pryde, presented in Oakland 2024. Pryde tackles a critical problem: while Stateful Firewalls (SFW) are essential for security, their proprietary and complex semantics make hidden evasion risks nearly impossible to uncover using standard techniques. To address this, we developed Pryde—a modular, model-guided workflow that successfully infers black-box firewall behavior to automatically synthesize over 6,000 unique evasion attacks against various popular firewalls and host stacks.
Post-graduation, I joined Google Net Infra (PLANET).  In the second part of my talk, I’ll share my five-year journey from being a PhD student in network security to working in big tech and building large-scale network infrastructure. Along the way, I learned a number of hard-earned lessons about finding meaningful work, gaining autonomy, and demonstrating the value of a PhD. I’ll dive into those key lessons.
