- 주 제: A Dual-VM, Binary Code Reuse Based Framework for Automated Virtual Machine Introspection

 

 

Abstract: Virtual machines (VMs) have significantly reshaped the landscape of our modern computer systems. They have pushed our computing paradigm from multi-task computing to multi-OS computing. However, when developing software out-of-VM, there is a semantic-gap problem. That is, the view at the hypervisor layer is often too low level, and there is no OS-abstractions such as FILES, APIs and system calls. This semantic-gap problem has been the road block for a decade for many out-of-VM applications such as virtual machine introspection, malware analysis, and memory forensics.

 

In this talk, Dr. Lin will present their recent efforts on how to automatically bridge the semantic-gap through a binary code reuse approach and demonstrate it with a number of compelling applications. More specifically, he will describe a dual-VM, space travel framework, and show how we can use an online kernel data redirection approach to automatically bridge the semantic-gap. Next, he will describe once the gap is bridged, how this framework would enable a number of new applications that is impossible before, such as using the native command for guest-OS introspection (e.g., listing the running processes), reconfiguration (e.g., changing an IP address), and attack recovery (e.g., kill a hidden malicious process) at hypervisor layer.

 

 

Short-bio: Dr. Zhiqiang Lin is an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Dallas. He received his PhD from the department of computer science at Purdue University in 2011. His primary research interests are systems and software security, with an emphasis of developing program analysis techniques and applying them to secure our OS kernels as well as the running software. Dr. Lin is a recipient of the AFOSR YIP award, a VMware faculty award, a best student paper award (from ACSAC), and the outstanding junior faculty research award from Erik Jonson School at UT Dallas.
